Self-Initiated Project · SEO / Search Marketing
Project Overview
This case study documents how I approach organic search growth from the ground up: using a self-selected niche to research, plan and prototype a full SEO strategy end-to-end, the same way I would for a client engagement, without a client’s name attached.
The Problem
Many small and medium-sized businesses have a website but little to no organic visibility, and rely entirely on paid traffic or referrals. That’s a fragile position: organic search is consistently one of the largest traffic sources available to a business, with widely cited industry research (BrightEdge and similar studies) putting organic search’s share of overall website traffic at roughly half of all traffic across industries. Businesses with no organic presence are effectively opting out of their biggest available channel.
Research
- Identified target search intent and mapped keyword clusters by funnel stage (informational, comparison, transactional).
- Reviewed top-ranking competitors for content gaps and on-page structural patterns.
- Audited technical fundamentals: site speed, crawlability, indexation and mobile usability.
- Reviewed published click-through-rate data by search ranking position. Studies from Backlinko, Advanced Web Ranking and similar sources consistently show the #1 organic position capturing roughly 27-32% of clicks, with a steep drop-off by position 3-5 and a much steeper one past page one.
Strategy
Built a prioritized SEO roadmap combining quick technical fixes, on-page optimization for existing pages, and a content plan targeting keyword clusters with realistic ranking potential, rather than chasing the highest-volume, highest-competition terms first.
Execution
- Drafted on-page SEO structure (titles, headings, internal linking) for priority pages.
- Outlined a content calendar addressing identified keyword and topic gaps.
- Documented technical SEO fixes in priority order, ranked by impact versus effort.
Tools Used
Keyword and SERP research tools, technical site-audit tools, spreadsheet-based keyword and content mapping, and published position-based CTR benchmark data.
Key Decisions
Prioritized quick-win keyword clusters with lower competition over high-volume, high-difficulty terms, favoring realistic, compounding progress over vanity keyword targets.
Outcome / Learnings
Result: Strategy and prototype completed, including keyword map, technical audit and content roadmap.
Expected impact: Given that position #1 captures roughly 27-32% of clicks for a given query versus a small fraction by position 10, the realistic expected outcome of this roadmap isn’t more traffic in the abstract, it’s a small number of well-chosen pages moving from page two or three into the top 3 positions for their target terms, which based on published CTR curves would represent a several-times increase in clicks for those specific queries. The compounding value comes from doing this consistently across a growing set of pages rather than any single ranking win.
What I Would Improve
With live client data, the next step would be validating keyword priorities against actual Search Console performance and refining the content calendar based on early ranking movement, rather than relying purely on pre-launch research.
Final Takeaways
SEO growth is rarely one big fix, it’s a compounding stack of technical health, relevant content and consistent on-page optimization. This project reinforced the value of prioritizing effort by realistic impact rather than chasing every possible keyword.
